Meet Omari Richins, MPH of The Public Health Millennial!
What is your public health occupation?
I work as a Health Improvement Program Officer at the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. In this role, I work deeply in the community to improve health and well-being, focusing on groups that have been marginalized, using an equity and population health lens. Through the Trust’s Healthy Places NC work, I am engaging with residents in some of North Carolina’s most vibrant yet underserved communities, to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table in improving their community’s health and well-being.
What is your public health goal?
My public health goal through my job, my platform (The Public Health Millennial), and personally is to create equitable systems change for all communities and individuals to reach self-actualization, especially the black community and other marginalized communities. To get to this, we need to center community voice in community-driven solutions. This will allow sustained and system-level change that empowers the community to drive health improvement. Through The Public Health Millennial, I hope to make an impact by assisting public health people to achieve their career goals, so they can make impactful contributions to their respective cause or community.
Any tips to share in the public health community?
If there was one tip I had to give, it would be to have an open mind and continue to build on experiences to develop skillsets. All opportunities you have are a means to learn, grow, and discover where you fit in the public health space. Or just as important, where you don’t fit. With more public health people in social media spaces, there is no better time to build relationships, learn, and develop into your best self. Take chances. Develop important skillsets. Build meaningful relationships. Lastly, take on uncomfortable opportunities to grow.
